What Rock band can sell out for nights at a 16,000 seat venue in 2011?
Fantazzmo: What Rock band can sell out for nights at a 16,000 seat venue in 2011?
Could Metallica, U2, Muse, or the Rolling Stones do it? How about the Eagles, Green Day, or a reunited Pink Floyd? Van Halen almost did it in 2007, I should know I went to 3 of the shows.
I live in Los Angeles, CA; home of the Lakers, Hollywood, and if California was an independent country, it would be the 8th largest economy in the world. There is a band called "Mana" from Guadalajara, Mexico that is currently at the Staples Center in Los Angeles playing night one of their four night appearance here.
What does this say about the state of music in Los Angeles, or the country for that matter. Are all the shows really sold out? Does it matter how much radio airplay they get? How long have they been around?
Whatever it is Mana is doing, they are doing it right. They have a loyal following that has been there for them for over 20 years. I don't know much about the band, I like a few of their tunes; but what they are doing these four days is definitely worth striving for.

In the Music Business, Distribution is King
Fantazzmo: In the Music Business, Distribution is King
Distribution is King in the music industry, He who controls distribution wins. It doesn't matter how good your album is if no one hears it. I believe Fantazzmo 1: Enter the Fantazz is a great album and I know there are at five four bonafide hit singles on there, but I do not have the ability or access to get them on the radio or to invest in a healthy marketing campaign to gain people's attention. A major label does have that capacity.
In order to be on a major radio station, you must be signed to a major label, they control that method of distribution. There is a reason why we are stuck hearing the same old songs on the radio, it is becuase the major labels make money when music from their catalogue is played. How about the new artists that we may or may not like, well, they are obviously signed to a major record label and we are stuck hearing them 20 times a day as well. The major label must recoup its investment on these new acts by making sure they are succesful, so they bombard us with a song 20 times a day because they know that eventually, if we hear it enough, we'll get used to it, or maybe even like it!
The music we hear on TV is also controlled by major labels. You're gonna see and hear the same artists on TV that you do on the radio. There goes that method of distribution. There used to be a great avenue for music via TV, and late night TV, but no more. We are fed the same usual suspects that are on the radio.
If a tree falls in the forest, does it make a sound? Youtube is the greatest thing since the internet! I Love YouTube. On Youtube I can see/hear my music as well as Metallica, Led Zeppelin, Kings of Leon, Muse, Rage Against the Machine, Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Pantera, Van Halen, AC/DC, Iron Maiden...etc, etc, etc....all my heroes! BUT I need to point people to Fantazzmo or we will be like the tree that falls in the forest with no one around.
My heroes were on major labels, they may not have started that way, but they wound up there. My plight along with all other independent artists is to figure out how to point people to my music/videos.
I am a firm believer that great music will prevail. If you build it they will come. Fantazzmo will build a faithful following. How will Fantazzmo earn and gain fans? One by one.

iCloud: A Music Industry Game-Changing Product
EmailBy Jeff Price
Apple’s new iCloud product marries the two disparate ideas of consumer convenience and the monetization of pirated music, providing what could be the “missing links” between consumers, artists, labels, music publishers and the emerging digital music industry. With its launch, the odometer on the music industry is about to reset itself (again).
For a simple flat monthly fee, just about any song in any user’s multiple iTunes libraries (iPhone, iPad, computer, iTouch) will automatically appear in a “virtual hard drive in the sky .“ No upload of the song is needed. Each song will be available to be grouped into playlists, streamed and re-downloaded. In the event the song is not already in the iTunes system, the user can upload it.
It’s important to note that in 2000, Michael Robertson first introduced the iCloud concept via his company MP3.com. Soon thereafter, the RIAA sued for copyright infringement, and in April 2008, the courts ordered the service to shut down.
To get this seemingly very simple and consumer-centric concept launched, Apple had to negotiate byzantine labyrinth-esque deals with labels and publishers (we are still waiting to learn if a stream or download via the iCloud service is legally considered a “public performance,” thereby requiring the songwriter to be paid as well). Over the past decade many have tried to reach this goal, most recently Google, yet only Apple was able to reach the end.
And the results, I believe, will be stunning.
iCloud is first and foremost a product for the consumer, and Apple never forgot that. iCloud provides a convenient, quick and easy way to manage and access all of your digital music as you choose.
The iCloud service differs markedly from the recent Amazon and Google music storage lockers–with these services you must actually upload your songs to be stored (except for Amazon, where, if you buy it at AmazonMP3, it auto-populates into the customer’s music locker). In addition, users are not able to re-download the tracks they uploaded. The re-download feature in iCloud provides the feeling of owning what you are streaming.
But the truly innovative and radical part of the iCloud service is its ability to allow copyright holders–the labels, artists, publishers and, possibly the songwriter–to make money off of music not bought the first time around. The iCloud service places all music from a subscriber, not just the music bought from iTunes, into the subscriber’s iCloud account, making it available for stream or re-download. This includes music:
- Ripped from a CD
- Downloaded from a peer to peer service
- Received in an email
- Downloaded via IM
- Ripped from your friends’ CDs
- Received free from the band
- Downloaded via a drop card
- Taken from a public “share” folder
- Captured as a stream and converted to an MP3
- Bought at AmazonMP3
- Etc
Each time a subscriber streams or re-downloads a song via the iCloud service, the label and publisher (and possibly the songwriter for the public performance) get paid. The iCloud business model has created a way for copyright holders to make money off of pirated music without making consumers feel like they are paying for the music.
The key to all of this is meeting the needs of consumers first (not the labels) as consumers drive the market (and not the other way around). And unlike many other digital music services, due to Apple’s market share, vast music library and 225 million + customer accounts (each with a credit card on file), Apple is uniquely positioned to provide the scale, and therefore possible revenue, for copyright holders to reach the proverbial “pot of gold” at the end of the digital music rainbow.
The end result is a product about convenience, elegance and simplicity, not a “subscription based streaming music service.” Yet it’s the money that people are paying for this convenience and simplicity that will be used to pay artists, record labels and publishers. And if the consumer did buy the song, Apple has provided a new model allowing the artist, label and publisher to get paid a second time for the same recording and song.
In effect, for labels and artists, iCloud is a new stand alone “store.” A decision could be made to give away a song that is in the iTunes music store for free (or at a dramatically lowered price), and each time it gets played via an iCloud account, the rights holder gets paid.
In the meantime, all of the songs in the iCloud service will be downloadable in the AAC format, meaning that they will only play on an Apple device, driving more dependence of Apple’s products. As an example, if you bought a song on AmazonMP3, and play it in your iTunes software, when it gets digitally fingerprinted by Apple, it will be available for you to re-download as an AAC file, only compatible with an Apple hardware device.
And finally, and perhaps more importantly, just as the original Napster trained people to download music and listen to it on their computers, Apple, due to its vast hardware proliferation (iPhones in particular) is in a position to shift consumer behavior yet again–this time from downloading music to listening to it via streams.
And with this consumer shift, the music industry will reset itself once again until the next revolution…

(UPDATED 6/8/11: We’ve just updated our FAQ to include information about the iCloud service. Below is an excerpt. Click here for our FAQ )
iCloud
Apple announced its new iCloud service on June 6, 2011.
There are two significant changes for iTunes music customers:
When they buy a track on iTunes from one device (like an iPhone), it automatically downloads on up to 10 devices that use the same iTunes store account (for example, another Apple computer, iPad, iTouch etc).
They can re-download any of the songs they bought from iTunes an unlimited number of times.
In both of these cases there is no additional payment made.
iTunes Match
On June 6, 2011 Apple also announced another service in addition to iTunes and iCloud called iTunes Match. This service will launch in the coming months, cost subscribers $24.99 per year and generate revenue for TuneCore Artists.
For subscribers, Apple will match any music they currently have in their iTunes library on a Mac or PC. If the exact same song exists in the iTunes store, that song will be available for subscribers to access via any other Apple device they own. This includes music ripped from CD, downloaded from friends, file sharing networks and other sources.
How Do TuneCore Artists Get Paid?
As long as your music is available to buy in iTunes, you get paid each time a subscriber re-downloads or streams your music via iTunes Match.
The amount TuneCore Artists get paid is based on a revenue share model similar to other stores we work with.
Each time your music is accessed via iTunes Match, TuneCore will pay you a proportionate share of the total subscription revenue generated by the iTunes Match service. This means you are paid each time a subscriber re-downloads and streams your music. The pay-out rates can fluctuate each month, depending on how much subscription revenue was generated and how often your music was re-downloaded and/or streamed. As always, TuneCore will pay out 100% of the revenue it receives for your music.
iTunes Match is New Way to Make Money
For TuneCore Artists, iTunes Match is almost like a new “store.” Each time a song you distributed to iTunes via TuneCore is re-downloaded or streamed by an iTunes Match subscriber, you get paid.
Therefore, as long as your song is available to buy in iTunes, you could, for example, decide to give that same song away for free directly to your fans. In fact, it doesn’t matter how or from where your fans actually got your music. If your fans use iTunes Match to re-download or stream your song, you get paid.

Fantazzmo: Is Radio Significant?
Fantazzmo: Is Radio Significant?
I live in Los Angeles, CA. Today I happened to be in a car with no cd player, no mp3 plug in, no aux, nothing, I was stuck listening to the radio here. The only station that plays decent songs once in a while is a nostalgia station that plays oldies, motown, pop and r&b from the 50's to the 80's and the problem with them is yes, they do play a lot of garbage as well, but at least we get some Beatles, Rolling Stones, Elvis, Motown and some gems here and there.
Who decides what songs come on the radio? Does what comes on the radio really identify what culture is listening to? Are the artists on the radio filling arenas, stadiums, concert halls, auditoriums and festivals around the world? Do they tour the US, UK, Australia, Brazil, South America, Japan and Mexico successfully? Are kids wearing T-shirts of these artists to school? Writing their names on backpacks, folders, posting stickers, buttons wherever they can to express their musical tastes.
I understand that Clear Channel rules the airwaves and outdoor billboards in L.A. and across the U.S. and that's a great achievement for any business, I have no problem with that. I would just like to know why they can't give Los Angeles, CA at least one radio that plays great music old and new. Maybe it's because the music industry is still lining their pockets and bribing them to play music on their catalogue.
Money talks.
Howard Stern is on satellite, I guess that's my next move if I really want to listen to music on the radio. There are a few stations that have their highlights here and there, but L.A. is no home to rock or alt/rock music. This post is about Rock & Alt Rock, I understand that Hip Hop rules the airwaves, but that is not the genre my band Fantazzmo is in and not the subject of this blog post.
Radio is not what it used to be, it is not a voice of the youth, of the culture, of an era, none of that.
Thank God for College radio, internet radio, subscription services and YouTube!
I still have hope that one day I'll hear Fantazzmo on terrestrial radio.
Cheers!

Fantazzmo: What does it take to launch a successful music career TODAY?
What does it take to launch a successful music career TODAY?
MONEY
One word, "MONEY!" That's what it takes to launch a successful music career in 2011. I know what you're thinking, it's always been that way, well you're right, but now YOU, the independent artist needs to have it more than ever! If you don't have it, know someone who has it or know how to get it, you're in for a long & bumpy ride.
Long, long ago in a bygone era, an artist had some great tunes, an image, played live, or cut demos; then hopefully someone with connections heard it or saw the artist perform and signed the artist to a record label. The artist then had a credit card with no limit & time to dedicate and develop their music career.
Those days are gone! Today's musician is most likely an independent artist funding everything themselves. Today's artist must have a higher skillset and knowledge to get ahead in the music world. What today's musician needs is a college education so that he/she can make the most money possible to support themselves, their music career and maybe even a family.
Today's musician needs to know about business, marketing, video production, website design, graphics, or they have to pay for it all THEMSELVES!
My point is you need money to launch your music career. You need instruments, rehearsal space, demos, albums, computers, videos, camaras, marketing, signs, merchandise, pr, the list goes on and on. The independent artist must foot the bill for all of this.
If you're not born wealthy, or connected, chances are you're like me and have to start from the bottom. You're gonna need great music, a whole lotta faith and enough determination to move mountains. Get an education, get money! Education=Money! Build a stream of income and you'll be better equipped than most.
Best of luck!

Fantazzmo: Reciprocity
RECIPROCITY
RECIPROCITY
All this pressure I’m feeling
So bad I know that I’m needing
All these things outta my head
Cannot forgive everything
Won’t take a peace offering
No, I’m not out of my mind
You’re foresaken
Ready for breakin’
Can’t believe I’ve taken all of this
I want something, give me something
Gotta have something, to show for this
Won’t be back again
Pack up and leave once again
Feel I’ve wasted all this time
Feeling free inside of me
Long to see the life in front of me
Leaving it all behind
Break down you’re door
Scream for some more
Taking back all what’s mine
I see the sea, breaking down on me
I see the sun, everything is fire
I see the light, fall from the sky
You know the moon, she wakes me
Then she take me

RECIPROCITY
All this pressure I’m feeling
So bad I know that I’m needing
All these things outta my head
Cannot forgive everything
Won’t take a peace offering
No, I’m not out of my mind
You’re foresaken
Ready for breakin’
Can’t believe I’ve taken all of this
I want something, give me something
Gotta have something, to show for this
Won’t be back again
Pack up and leave once again
Feel I’ve wasted all this time
Feeling free inside of me
Long to see the life in front of me
Leaving it all behind

Fantazzmo: The State You Are in Determines Your Possibilities
Fantazzmo: The State You Are in Determines Your Possibilities
The emotional state you are in determines the possibilities of what you can achieve in your life. When you are positive, confident, and excited about your goals, that is when your mind is at peak performance and you can achieve the maximum results and progress towards your goals. You are illuminted, inspired, ideas are overflowing and your mind is trying hard to grasp them all. This is the state we need to be in most to get what we want out of life. We need to follow this state with precise and expedient action. Precision and speed!
Negativity, and anger are states that are not only detrimental to achieving your goals, but are also harmful to your health. It is nearly impossible to accomplish your goals while being in a negative state.
When you catch yourself in a negative state, ask yourself, "What needs to happen in order for me to be in a better state of mind?" Set thought into action and move mountains!
What state of mind are you in?

Fantazzmo: We Live in a Universe of Infinite Possiblity
Fantazzmo: We Live in a Universe of Infinite Possiblity
We Live in a Universe of Infinite Possiblity. We can get from one end of the world to the other in a matter of hours. We can purchase goods from other countries by shopping at a local store. We can communicate with people around the world at will and play video games with people in different countries at the same time.
Science is creating life forms using DNA. Stem cells are saving lives. Physicians are placing fertilized eggs in the wombs of adult females and often can determine how many children they will have.
This is all possible because someone had the idea, the dream to make it possible. We are creators, what we will to be, will be when we proceed with thoughtful and purposeful action. Sitting around building castles in the sky without action results in nothing. If we are to truly cause our dreams and visions to materialize we must act without cease.
What are your dreams and goals? What is your vision for your life? What will your legacy be?

Fantazzmo: Forward Momentum
Fantazzmo: Momentum
Once you start working on your dreams, once you are fired up about your dreams, others will align with you and help you accomplish your dreams.
These are laws of the universe, the Laws Of Attraction.
God will put people in your path to help you accomplish your dreams. They will help and work with you towards your dreams. People will align with you that believe in your dreams and goals.
Opportunities happen to those who dare to act, put into motion and pursue what they want in life. Put your goals into motion, move, get inspired, get fired up and doors will open, opportunities will present themselves and pop up in new places.
Get fired up! Get inspired!
What do you want to accomplish? What do you want to feel? What to do you want to see? How do you want to live?
It's all possible just get up and get going!
