Taft, Calif. —
Taft has become a mecca for off-road motorcycle enthusiasts, and now the street bikes are coming to see what Taft is all about.
The first annual Taft Bike Fest is almost here.
No one is quite sure how big its going to be, but organizer Gene Jones said there is a lot of interest from all over the region.
He guessed as many as 3,000 to 4,000 people could show up but didn't want to make an estimate.
“I don't know,” Jones said Tuesday. “I'm getting calls from people in Oregon, Phoenix, different bike clubs from all over.”
There has been a lot of entrance from vendors, too. Shannon Jones, events coordinator for the taft Chamber of Commerce, said about 35 booths have been reserved by Tuesday afternoon
One thing that is certain is there is going to be plenty of beer, plenty of events and plenty of bands over the next five days.
A full weekend of events ranging from burnout contests to lawnmower races to a big poker run on Sunday will give both riders and spectators a lot to do and see.
Vendor booths and the headquarters tent will be along Rails to Trails near the Fifth Street Plaza.
Sixth Street and Fourth Street will be closed to traffic beween Main Street and Supply Row from 6 a.m. Friday through 8 p.m. Sunday.
Supply Row will be closed from Fourth to Tenth during the same time period.
Main Street between Fourth and Fifth will be closed between 8 a.m. to 1 a.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
The big events will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday over the Labor Day weekend but things get started Wednesday night with Bike Night at Chilled & Grilled, 621 Center St. from 6 p.m. until closing with a live band and drink and dinner food specials.
The Pioneer Mercantile Building at Fifth and Main is opening again for the Taft Bike Fest as the Pioneer Bar and Saloon starting Thursday and will have a live band (H?ist) and drink specials from 4 p.m. to closing.
The action really gets underway Friday and the Rails to Trails area takes center stage.
The main stage (on the east side of Sixth Street on the north side of Rails to Trails) will have a DJ from noon to 5 p.m. with live bands taking over from 5 p.m. to at least 11:30 p.m.

Fantazzmo: Why did Fantazzmo release a debut album in a singles driven society?
I am fully aware that we are currently living in a singles driven society. Fantazzmo released its debut album Fantazzmo 1: Enter the Fantazz which is a full length album, a collection of songs because we want people to be able to familiarize themselves with our entire set before coming to see us live.
Every song on "Enter the Fantazz" can stand on its own merits and I'll defend every note on the album. Yes, many genres were explored on this debut effort and I will put any Fantazzmo song up against any song in that genre.
As a music lover and fan of many bands, I know that if I hear one great song by an artist, I will check out another song and another & so on. Having a full length album out allows people to check out 10 songs and 2 instrumentals by Fantazzmo.
We are currently performing live shows that are approx 30-45 min per set. If one song is 3.5 to 5 min long, what are people supposed to expect after just that one single? Are they expected to hear 40 min of unfamiliar music or cover tunes. Yes, most of the people we are playing for have not heard our album, but they can go back home and look us up online and go hey, that was that song! Or, yeah I remember that song too, it kicked ass! This way people have the opportunity of being familiar with every song we go up there and play!
"Fantazzmo 1: Enter the Fantazz" is a musical journey meant to be played from beginning to end. It lives and breathes, there are climactic moments and moments of reflection. It is paced and was organized after much consideration and thought. The album contains two instrumentals which give the album depth and lets you feel like it is longer than its 45 min playing time, then when it's done, you're like that was quick, I've gotta hear that again!
Fantazzmo is not trying to give people 10 songs in the same style. We're trying to create a musical canvas with color, depth, variety that keeps you entertained and guessing throughout and takes you through an emotional and fun musical journey. I don't like to be bored in life, music, movies, or anything. I like variety and "Enter the Fantazz" has a wealth of variety but is still a concise musical effort by one band.
We've given you 45 min of great music. Each song can hold its own ground, this will be further proven with the release of the remixes in 2012.
FANTAZZMO 1: ENTER THE FANTAZZ AVAILABLE NOW EVERYWHERE MUSIC IS SOLD AND STREAMED ONLINE!!!
Cover songs are a great way for a new band to give the audience something they can relate to or are familiar with. It's often difficult to watch and hear a new band play a 45 minute set of songs you don't know unless the material is really good and well executed.
All the greats played cover tunes or other people's songs. The Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin. Even today's artists in every genre of music imaginable including Metallica and A Perfect Circle have recorded and performed covers.
Cover songs are often a way to break an artist through to the mainstream, such as when Van Halen covered the Kinks' "You Really Got Me." In the 50's and 60's, many Rock n Roll long playing albums were comprised of 50% originals and 50% covers. Cover tunes are also used to re-ignite an acts stale, stagnant or declining career. Some artists use cover tunes as an homage to their influences or as a goodbye to their fans at the end of their careers. Unfortunately, some artists just try to make a buck.
Some say that the club scene is saturated with cover bands, but that is a different story. Those bands are just trying to make a pay check or just having fun playing music after their boring day jobs. This blog entry is focusing on the independent original artist implementing covers to establish a connection with the crowd or get some financial support while touring and trying to build their following and grow their band.
Today's independent artist must thrive on the road and through their live shows. Being on the road is expensive. Sure you can sleep in your van and practically starve, but if you want to make a career out of playing on the road, you're going to have to get paid, or sponsored.
Most venues in the US will not pay you if you don't have a large following unless you can play cover tunes. In my early bands, I never really like playing a bunch of covers, but I realize I was wrong. I should have mastered as many covers as possible in as many genres as possible to truly learn the art of songwriting and I may have become a better songwriter quicker. Cover tunes are a great learning tool that can help you construct great songs.
Get your band together, pick some covers that relate to your style, make them your own by adding some of your personality into them. Have some fun!
Cheers!

It's August 2011, Fantazzmo just finished up a great week with 5 shows in 7 days and I can't wait to do it again!
I heard somewhere that the Beatles played 1000 shows before anyone knew who they were. I'm not sure if that's true or not, but if it is, Fantazzmo better keep doing what we're doing. 1000 shows does sound about right, it may take that long for a good band to become great live.
Hendrix played the club circuits for years before being discovered by Chas Chandler and heading to England. Led Zeppelin were all accomplished musicians before coming together and exploding onto the music scene. Jimmy Page was a studio musician and a member of the Yardbirds before forming Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant had his various bands and a previous record deal while recording the first Zep cd. John Paul Jones was a studio musician and John Bonham was in various bands as well.
What's my point? All the greats played a lot of shows before they were known, it's all about honing your craft and constantly improving. Fantazzmo is made of four professional musicians that have been in various bands and have various recording experience, but we are constantly striving to improve our live sound, performance, rapport with the audience and reaching out to fans.
A band that is well rehearsed can get tight and great simply by rehearsals, but playing live is a completely different story. Being great live takes a more. There are many different facets to a live show, the sound of the room, your stage presence, lighting, your sound on stage, your sound in the audience, the sound man, the promoter, transportation, logistics & shelter, but most importantly, the audience.
There are so many things that can interfere with your actual performance, the more live shows you do, the better you get at avoiding, foreseeing and preventing problems from occurring. You get better with dealing with the outside issues that can interfere with your performance and of course you become a better performer.
If you're in a band, get out and play live as soon as everyone is comfortable and you feel your band is tight. If you're rehearsing the same material for six months and you have no shows lined up, you run the risk of burning yourself and everyone out.
Fantazzmo has a great September lined up. We have 9 shows scheduled so far and are adding shows daily for September and the rest of the year. We have to get the video for "I Know You're Mine" out really soon and end 2011 strong to get ready to have an AMAZING 2012.
Fantazzmo is coming your way really soon, and we're winning people over one by one. We're doing everything by word of mouth. We don't have ad campaigns, publicity, radio airplay, videos on rotation in any networks and we're doing this all independently. We are honing our craft, refining our sound, improving our live show and always meeting new people, getting to know the fans and thanking everyone for their support.
Look for Fantazzmo coming to a town near you really soon!
